OSWEGO, IL – A woman was fatally stabbed in her own home Tuesday afternoon in a violent attack that authorities say was carried out by her ex-husband, who is now facing a host of felony charges. The attack unfolded as the victim’s current husband watched the terrifying scene play out in real time on home security cameras.

Ryan D. Dodd, 44, has been charged with first-degree murder and multiple other offenses in connection with the killing of 41-year-old Ashley Stewart. Law enforcement officials say the incident erupted shortly after 1 p.m., when police received an urgent call about a break-in on the 400 block of Valentine Way in Oswego, a suburb roughly 40 miles west of Chicago.

Investigators say Stewart’s husband, monitoring their surveillance system from afar, saw a man he recognized as her former spouse pursue Stewart into their garage. He immediately dialed 911 as the situation escalated. Responding officers arrived quickly but discovered Stewart already dead inside the home, succumbing to numerous stab wounds.

Within about half an hour of the attack, authorities located and apprehended Dodd after spotting his vehicle. Surveillance images released by police appear to show Dodd lying in wait outside the residence, partially concealed by bushes, before the fatal encounter.

According to police, Dodd followed Stewart into the home before carrying out the deadly assault. Prosecutors moved swiftly, filing formal charges that also include home invasion, armed violence, residential burglary, and aggravated stalking. As of Thursday, Dodd remained in custody at the Kendall County Jail, held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on March 9.

The homicide has left a wave of grief throughout the Oswego community, particularly among Stewart’s family and friends. Stewart, remembered as a devoted wife and mother, leaves behind six children, including a two-year-old son.
