JEFFERSONVILLE, IN – Police in southern Indiana uncovered a gruesome crime Friday, discovering a decapitated body inside a Jeffersonville home and later finding the victim’s head in another location.

The situation unfolded after authorities received a call around 10 a.m. from the former wife of 73-year-old Erich V. Winnecke Sr., who requested a welfare check at his residence on Summerlin Place. Concerned for his safety, she cited ongoing conflicts between Winnecke and their son, 33-year-old Bryce William Winnecke.

Upon arriving at the house, officers encountered a barricaded situation and called in a SWAT team to assist. After deploying flash-bang devices, law enforcement persuaded Bryce Winnecke to exit the home, ending a tense four-hour standoff. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Once inside, police made a grim discovery—Winnecke Sr.’s headless body was found on the premises. Investigators located the decapitated head in a separate bedroom believed to have been used by the son, according to court documents.

Jeffersonville Police Chief Kenny Kavanaugh described the scene as deeply distressing, acknowledging the lasting emotional impact on the victim’s family. Authorities emphasized the rarity and brutality of such a crime in the neighborhood.

Bryce Winnecke now faces charges of murder and abuse of a corpse. He is currently being held at the Clark County Jail as the investigation continues.

Neighbors on Summerlin Place expressed shock in the aftermath of the incident, stating the area is normally quiet and regarded as safe. Residents recounted how law enforcement activity and the presence of tactical units upended what is usually a peaceful street.

“It’s hard to process something like this happening here,” one neighbor said, noting the mix of disbelief and concern the incident has stirred among local families.

Police have not released a possible motive in the case and continue to gather evidence as they work to piece together the events leading up to the killing. Jeffersonville officials urged the public to respect the privacy of those affected and to allow investigators to carry out their work.

No additional suspects are currently sought, and authorities indicated that there is no ongoing threat to the Jeffersonville community. The case remains under review by local prosecutors.
