Indiana man shot in the back by 22-year-old during argument about money

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – A young man from Indiana is now in custody and facing murder charges weeks after an alleged altercation with his father led to a deadly shooting. Indianapolis police have arrested Donnie Abney III, 22, in connection with the killing of 62-year-old Forrest Tab Grant that occurred on April 17.

Court documents reveal that the confrontation began with an argument over money between Grant and Donnie Abney Jr., Abney III’s father. The dispute happened at a local bus stop and escalated when Donnie Abney III, referred to as “Little Donnie,” joined in the quarrel, standing by his father’s side.

Witnesses described how the argument turned violent when “Little Donnie” allegedly brandished a gun during the dispute, with claims that he did not initially fire. The situation worsened when Grant tried to leave the scene; it was then that he was reportedly shot in the back, according to witnesses.

Following the shooting, both father and son fled. Grant succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital shortly after the incident. This tragic event came just a day after an earlier confrontation involving “Little Donnie” and Grant at a Family Dollar store, where a gun was reportedly drawn but not fired.

The gravity of the case intensified when Abney III supposedly confessed his actions to a family member through Facebook Messenger.

Court documents indicate that he acknowledged shooting Grant, claiming he acted out of self-defense in anticipation of Grant pulling a weapon first. “Don’t stress out, I didn’t mean to,” he allegedly told a relative, further managing to state, “He was going to pull his gun first.”

Police accounted that witnesses saw Grant holding a stick during the initial argument, not an evident firearm. Following a tip-off from a family member and an intensive two-week search, officers finally apprehended “Little Donnie” after he attempted to flee from custody. He is now held at the Marion County Jail.

Meanwhile, law enforcement continues to deliberate on whether to press additional charges against Donnie Abney Jr. Further insight and decisions regarding his involvement and any potential charges will come from the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
