Investigators say surveillance footage captured a Honda accelerating toward the motorcyclist after the couple left a divorce hearing.

CROWN POINT, Ind. — A 32-year-old Indiana woman is accused of deliberately driving a car into her estranged husband as he sat on a motorcycle outside a Lake County courthouse, then attacking him with a knife after the vehicle became disabled, according to court documents and law enforcement accounts.

The Aug. 24 confrontation happened only minutes after Adriana Cisneros-Velazquez and her husband had been inside the Lake County Government Center for a divorce hearing, investigators said. Prosecutors filed five felony counts the following day, including attempted murder, two counts of attempted aggravated battery and two counts of domestic battery by means of a deadly weapon. The allegations describe a dispute that moved from a court proceeding into the government center parking lot and quickly became a criminal investigation.

Investigators placed the confrontation at about 3:15 p.m. in the parking lot of the government complex in Crown Point. An eyewitness told investigators that the man was riding a motorcycle through the lot and that a gray Honda driven by Cisneros-Velazquez moved toward him. The witness said the Honda accelerated in the direction of the motorcycle and struck it, sending the rider onto the vehicle. Authorities allege the Honda continued moving and dragged the man for a short distance before he was able to get free.

The car then traveled into a grassy area and became immobilized after hitting another object, according to accounts of the probable cause affidavit. Investigators allege Cisneros-Velazquez got out while armed with a retractable knife and went toward her husband. A struggle followed. The man was eventually able to take the knife away, and other people in the parking lot intervened to separate the pair. Both were taken to a hospital for evaluation after the encounter.

The husband later gave investigators an account of what happened before the collision. He said he and Cisneros-Velazquez were married but going through a divorce and had just left a divorce-court hearing. According to the affidavit, he saw her Honda while preparing to leave on his motorcycle and did not want to pull into her path. He stopped because he intended to let the car pass. Authorities allege that instead of continuing past him, the Honda accelerated toward his motorcycle and hit him.

That account gave detectives one version of the encounter, but investigators also had evidence from outside the couple themselves. A witness described seeing the collision and the later struggle, and authorities reviewed surveillance video covering part of the government center parking lot. According to reporting based on the court documents, investigators said the footage showed the Honda waiting while the motorcycle stopped and then accelerating and turning toward it. Police said the video was consistent with major parts of the witness and victim accounts.

The husband reported being thrown onto the Honda and dragged before freeing himself. Medical records described in local reporting documented injuries from the vehicle collision along with a wrist sprain and other injuries. Hospital personnel also found a puncture wound on his upper arm that authorities attributed to the knife encounter. Investigators reported finding blood in the corresponding area of his heavy motorcycle jacket. The injuries were treated after emergency personnel transported him from the scene.

Police recovered a black retractable knife in the area where the confrontation ended, according to the court-document account. Its location became another part of the evidence collected after officers arrived. The investigation also included statements from people who witnessed portions of the incident and the government center surveillance recording. Prosecutors later relied on the allegations assembled by investigators when bringing the five felony counts. The filing of charges is not a determination of guilt, and the allegations remain subject to the court process.

Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. separately described the confrontation as a domestic incident outside the courthouse. In an account released to CBS Chicago, he said a witness reported that a man and woman believed to be in a domestic relationship had been involved in a dispute after leaving the courtroom. The sheriff’s account said the woman struck the man while he was on the motorcycle and then displayed a knife. It also said the man fought with her before both were taken for medical evaluation.

Cisneros-Velazquez was advised of her rights when investigators attempted to speak with her at the hospital, according to reporting based on the court records. She declined to provide an account of the confrontation. Authorities therefore did not publicly release her version of the events described by the husband, eyewitnesses and investigators. Public reporting also did not establish a motive for the alleged attack beyond its occurrence after the couple’s divorce hearing, and authorities have not publicly detailed what happened during that hearing.

The criminal case includes an attempted murder allegation as well as separate aggravated- and domestic-battery counts. Region News Source, citing the charging documents, reported that the aggravated-battery counts alleged conduct posing a substantial risk of death and conduct capable of causing serious permanent disfigurement. The two domestic-battery counts were filed as allegations involving a deadly weapon. Those are formal accusations brought by prosecutors, and the state would have to prove the elements of any charge that ultimately proceeds to trial.

The location added another layer to the investigation because the encounter occurred in the parking lot of the same government complex the couple had just left. The husband was preparing to depart on a motorcycle, while Cisneros-Velazquez was in the Honda, according to the affidavit accounts. The surveillance recording was therefore important not only because it captured parts of the physical confrontation but because investigators said it showed the movement of the two vehicles immediately before the impact, providing evidence separate from later recollections.

The publicly released accounts leave several points unresolved. Authorities have not released a detailed explanation of the disagreement surrounding the divorce proceeding, and the reports reviewed do not identify any statement by Cisneros-Velazquez describing what she says happened in the parking lot. The husband’s name has not been broadly identified in the principal reports. Police and prosecutors also have not publicly suggested that the divorce hearing itself establishes why the alleged collision and knife confrontation occurred.

For now, Cisneros-Velazquez is being held in the Lake County Jail without bond in the initial reports following her arrest. Law&Crime reported at the time that her next court date was not immediately listed, while later searches of publicly available news coverage through Sept. 30 did not identify a reported disposition of the criminal case. The charges remain allegations unless and until they are established through the judicial process.
