India’s BJP Government Tries to Suppress BBC Documentary Exposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi

India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has attempted to suppress a BBC documentary about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BBC documentary, titled “To the Person Sitting in Darkness”, was set to air in India, but the government blocked it from airing.

The documentary, which was released on YouTube, has been viewed over a million times. The documentary focused on the past of Prime Minister Modi and his role in the 2002 Gujarat riots, in which over 1000 people were killed.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, was asked to remove the documentary from his Twitter account at the request of the Indian government. Musk complied with the request and removed the documentary from his account.

The BBC has defended its documentary, describing it as an objective look at Prime Minister Modi’s past. The BBC has said that it was not trying to use Indian Muslims as “cannon fodder” against India’s leadership.

The controversy has sparked a debate about freedom of speech and press in India, with many calling for the government to allow the documentary to be aired. The BJP government has yet to comment on the issue.
