INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION – An intriguing mystery surrounding the disappearance of a tomato grown in microgravity on the International Space Station has finally been solved. US astronaut Francisco “Frank” Rubio was accused of eating the tomato, but its remnants were recently discovered by the ISS crew during a live stream celebrating the station’s 25th anniversary. The tomato had vanished over eight months ago during a harvesting operation but has now been found, bringing relief to Rubio. The tomato was part of an agricultural experiment called Veg-05, aimed at advancing knowledge of sustaining astronauts during lengthy missions.
Rubio, who spent a record 371 days in space, expressed regret over the lost tomato and feared being branded a tomato thief. However, the discovery brought him some relief. The Veg-05 project led to the successful growth of only 12 red dwarf tomatoes in space, compared to over 100 in a parallel experiment conducted on Earth, as reported by Nasa.
The project also aimed to evaluate the viability and effects of spaceflight on fruit crop growth under different light conditions. In addition, it offered astronauts taste tests and surveys to determine the psychological impact of interacting with plants in the spaceflight environment. Despite the mishap, Rubio fondly spoke of his time growing and harvesting on the ISS, highlighting the benefits of the vegetable production system known as Veggie.
The discovery of the missing tomato provides valuable insight into agricultural experiments in space and contributes to the knowledge that will benefit future generations of astronauts. The tomato’s reappearance brings closure to the mysterious disappearance that puzzled the ISS crew and the scientific community for months.
