Investigation: Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Execs Resign Amid 80 Deaths Linked to Products

Tokyo, Japan – Following a thorough investigation into the potential link between some of Kobayashi Pharmaceutical’s products and 80 reported deaths, two top executives of the Japanese drugmaker, Akihiro Kobayashi and Kazumasa Kobayashi, have decided to step down from their positions. Both individuals, who are part of the founding family of the company, resigned to address concerns over the firm’s beni kōji fermented rice products.

In March, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical initiated a recall of five of its products after receiving customer reports of kidney problems. The company took action after a doctor raised alarms about health issues in January, prompting an internal investigation and the establishment of a customer hotline for inquiries and support. Customers affected by the products reported symptoms such as changes in urine color, limb swelling, and fatigue.

Further investigations uncovered the presence of a potentially toxic acid produced by mold at one of the company’s factories. In response to the situation, the company’s board expressed condolences to the families of those who had passed away and apologized deeply to customers and business partners for the situation.

In a statement, the company announced that Satoshi Yamane, the head of sustainability policy, would assume the role of president, taking over from Akihiro Kobayashi. Kobayashi expressed his intent to oversee any compensation arrangements required as a result of the incident. The beni kōji products, advertised for their health benefits in managing cholesterol and blood pressure, also have a traditional use as a food dye.

The resignations of the executives signal a commitment to addressing the consequences of the product-related concerns and ensuring accountability within the company. As the investigation continues, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical aims to restore trust with its customers and uphold transparency in its operations moving forward.
