CORALVILLE, IA – An Iowa man faces a murder charge after police allege he fatally stabbed his wife in their Coralville apartment early Friday morning, capping what authorities describe as a planned attack.
Law enforcement responded to a call just after 6:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 2800 block of Spring Rose Circle, where officers found 41-year-old Amber Martin suffering from multiple stab wounds. Paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.
James Martin, 47, was taken into custody without incident. According to a criminal complaint, investigators say the suspect admitted to orchestrating a plan to kill his wife and used a kitchen knife in the attack. Detectives believe Amber Martin was stabbed repeatedly after being surprised by her husband as she exited another room in their home.
Authorities said the evidence collected at the scene corroborated James Martin’s statements, as well as the account of a witness present at the time. However, officials have not released a motive for the fatal assault.
Amber Martin had been working as a medical laboratory scientist supervisor at the University of Iowa Health Care system since last September. Colleagues remembered her as empathetic and full of energy, noting the positive impact she had in her short time with the organization. Amber’s supervisor described the staff as devastated by her death and highlighted her contributions to the clinical microbiology field.
Prior to joining the university, both Amber and James Martin reportedly worked at Quincy Medical Group in Illinois, specializing in medical research. Former coworkers recalled Amber as friendly and passionate about her work, while describing James as more reserved. The attack has left colleagues and friends deeply shaken, as many viewed the couple as close-knit.
Court records indicate that James Martin remains held at the Johnson County Jail, where a judge has set his bond at $1 million. No attorney of record was listed for Martin as of Monday.
As police continue their investigation, they have urged anyone with information about the case to come forward. The case remains an active homicide investigation.
Amber Martin’s death has sent shockwaves through the local medical and research community, where she was respected for her leadership and expertise.
No further details about the events leading up to the violence have been disclosed by authorities. Autopsy results are pending.
