Prior to the announcement of Apple’s iPhone 15, there were speculations that the device’s USB-C port might have restrictions, necessitating the use of only Apple-endorsed cables and accessories for maximum data transfer speeds and charging capacity. This was conjectured based on the past restrictions seen on the Lightning port in older iPhone models.
Rumours were making the rounds about Apple replicating their MFi (Made for iPhone) certification program, which they previously had for third-party cables and accessories for lightning ports. In that program, manufacturers were required to pay a licensing fee to Apple in order to access special authentication chips which, when included in their accessories, signaled to the iPhone that these were approved accessories, thereby unlocking full charging and data transfer features. Without the chip, charging and data transfer speeds were restricted.
These speculations were reinforced by ShrimpApplePro, reputed for their credible leaks on Dynamic Island and iPhone 14 RAM, who claimed to have information on the likelihood of the USB-C’s features being unlocked only by official Apple or MFi cables and devices.
Despite these rumors, reports have now surfaced suggesting that these limitations do not exist for the iPhone 15’s USB-C port. Asthetica, a tech-focused media outlet, has reported that the USB-C port on iPhone 15 models is completely standard and does not require Apple’s certification for cables or accessories. According to their report, the iPhone 15’s USB-C port is compatible with all existing USB 3 and Power Delivery (USB-PD) compliant cables, chargers, and accessories, just like other Apple devices.
Supporting this claim, it was observed that Apple updated its compatibility tables for existing Mac and iPad USB-C chargers and cables to reflect compatibility with the iPhone 15. These existing chargers and cables do not contain any authentication chips which imply that the USB-C port in the iPhone 15 does not necessitate any authentication.
While independent reviews are yet to conclusively verify these claims, it seems that Apple has externally invalidated rumors of any restrictions on its iPhone 15 USB-C port. However, users will still need to ensure their cables have the necessary capabilities for optimal use. Specifically, to take advantage of the 10Gbps data transfer speeds of the iPhone 15 Pro models, a USB 3-compliant cable will be required. The supplied cable in the iPhone 15 box will not be sufficient for this purpose.
