Former President Jimmy Carter, the longest-living president in U.S. history, will begin receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia, the Carter Center said Wednesday.
The Carter Center said in a statement that the 95-year-old former president is being treated for advanced age-related health issues.
“President Carter is resting comfortably at home and is surrounded by his family,” the statement said. “He is grateful for all the prayers and kind words he has received from around the world.”
Carter, who served as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, was the oldest living former president in U.S. history before his death in 2020 at the age of 94. He was also the longest-living president, surpassing the record set by George H.W. Bush, who died in 2018 at the age of 94.
Since leaving office, Carter has remained active in public life, traveling extensively, speaking out on political issues, and working to promote peace and human rights. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote human rights, democracy, and international cooperation.
Carter has also been a vocal advocate for the poor and a champion of civil rights. He has continued to be active in the Carter Center, a non-profit organization he founded in 1982, which works to promote peace and human rights around the world.
The Carter Center said that in accordance with the former president’s wishes, no further details about his condition will be released.
