Oakland, CA – Fourteen years ago, on September 7, 2009, Desiree Davis, also known as Dezzy, was tragically killed in North Oakland at just 17 years old. Dezzy was a vibrant and talented young girl who had a passion for art, swimming, and writing. She dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and was known for her ability to rap lyrics to many songs. Despite facing criticism for an eye imperfection during her school years, Dezzy remained resilient and pursued happiness.
Desziree’s determination and hard work were evident in her multiple jobs, including her role at The Black Repertory Theater in Berkeley, where she particularly thrived. As she embarked on her senior year of high school, Dezzy held the position of co-editor for the school’s yearbook, participated in track and field, and dedicated her time to volunteering at the Berkeley Humane Society. With each passing day, her self-confidence grew, and she eagerly explored new interests.
The devastating loss of Dezzy has left her mother, Dru Ann Davis, grappling with anguish and a fundamental question: How could this senseless tragedy have taken away her beloved daughter?
