Justice Served: Cleveland Man Found Guilty in Murderous Convenience Store Shooting Set to Receive Sentence

Cleveland, Ohio – A man convicted of a shooting at a convenience store in October 2022 is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday morning. After a trial held in the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas on September 25, 45-year-old Charles Wright was found guilty of multiple charges, including aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, attempted murder, and discharge of a firearm on or near a prohibited premises.

The incident occurred on October 26, 2022, when Wright opened fire inside the USA Food Mart on East 123rd Street. Two customers and a store employee were shot, resulting in the death of the employee, 60-year-old Michael Gunn. According to the police, Wright and a 30-year-old man engaged in a verbal altercation before Wright left the store and returned with a handgun, targeting the 30-year-old man, Gunn, and a 40-year-old woman.

Both surviving victims were transported to University Hospitals for medical treatment. The woman suffered a gunshot wound to the ankle, while the man sustained a gunshot wound to the thigh. Immediately after the incident, Wright fled the scene on foot.

Approximately a month later, on November 21, 2022, members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested Wright while he was sitting in a vehicle in the Cleveland area. U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott emphasized the significance of this arrest, stating, “This senseless act of violence resulted in the death of a hardworking, good man. The efforts of our task force last night brought these victims’ families one step closer to the justice they deserve.”

Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas Judge Kelly Ann Gallagher will preside over Wright’s sentencing on September 29. The conviction underscores the gravity of the charges brought against Wright, marking a step towards accountability for the devastating shooting at the Cleveland convenience store.
