JUSTIFIABLE: Hoover Man’s Shooting Death in Birmingham Ruled Self-Defense

Birmingham, Alabama – The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office announced on Friday that the shooting death of Hoover man, Raul Angel Cajigas Jr., in Birmingham late last month has been deemed justifiable. Authorities stated that no charges would be filed in the case, as Cajigas may have been involved in a robbery at the time of the incident on February 26.

The fatal shooting took place around 10 p.m. in the University Crossings apartments, previously known as Montello Gardens, located in the Titusville community. Birmingham Police responded to reports from Shot Spotter, the city’s gunfire detection system, and found Cajigas on the sidewalk upon arrival. He was later pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.

This marks the fourth homicide investigation at the University Crossings apartments since 2022, with the previous incident occurring during Spring Break in 2023. The area has seen a concerning trend in violent crimes, raising concerns among residents and local authorities alike.

Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald revealed that Shot Spotter recorded two sets of gunfire alerts, indicating multiple shots fired during the incident. The circumstances surrounding Cajigas’ death have sparked discussions about public safety and crime prevention in the neighborhood.

Residents in the community have expressed fear and frustration over the recurring violence near the apartments, calling for increased police presence and community programs to address the root causes of crime. City officials are working on initiatives to enhance safety measures and improve the overall well-being of the neighborhood.

The decision by the District Attorney’s Office to not press charges in Cajigas’ case has ignited debates about self-defense laws and the use of force in potential criminal activities. The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities in determining justifiable homicides and the legal consequences that follow such cases.

As the community mourns the loss of Cajigas and grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, discussions on crime prevention, community policing, and social support systems have taken on a renewed urgency. Local leaders are advocating for collaborative efforts to address underlying issues and create a safer environment for all residents.
