BOWLING GREEN, KY – A man has been charged after his wife was found dead in a burning vehicle, ending a harrowing series of events that authorities say spanned several days and left three young children caught in the middle.
Salko Husejnovic, 31, faces charges including murder, tampering with evidence, and abuse of a corpse after investigators say he killed his wife, Jasmina Aljic, and kept her body in their home for three days before attempting to destroy evidence of the crime. The Warren County Sheriff’s Office began its investigation early on January 19, after firefighters responded to a car fire on Threlkel Ferry Road and discovered a body inside the burned-out vehicle.
An autopsy later revealed that Aljic was already dead before the fire began, as no soot was found in her lungs. Investigators believe the blaze was a deliberate attempt to obscure evidence related to her death.
Detectives allege that Husejnovic killed Aljic during an altercation in their Bowling Green home and left her body on the kitchen floor for approximately three days. Throughout that time, Husejnovic and the couple’s three children continued to live in the house, with Husejnovic reportedly telling them their mother was merely asleep.
Authorities say Husejnovic was assisted by Shelly Boyd, 44, who is reportedly in a relationship with his brother. According to investigators, Boyd witnessed the fatal attack on Aljic but did not intervene. Instead, she later purchased gasoline and helped transport Aljic’s body in her vehicle. The two then drove to Threlkel Ferry Road and set the vehicle on fire in an alleged attempt to dispose of the evidence.
During a preliminary hearing, law enforcement revealed that Aljic had recently relocated to Bowling Green from Missouri, where she had previously obtained a protective order against Husejnovic. She reportedly moved to Kentucky after Christmas, seeking a fresh start.
When detectives arrived at Husejnovic’s residence following the discovery of the burned vehicle, Boyd answered the door and initially claimed Husejnovic was not present. However, officers later located him hiding inside the home. At first, Husejnovic denied knowledge of his wife’s whereabouts, claiming he had last seen her in November.
A search of the residence produced evidence linked to the alleged crime. Investigators say they found a bag of clothing stashed in a kitchen cabinet, later matched to Boyd through surveillance footage. Three bloodstained pillows were discovered inside a washing machine.
Authorities said Boyd eventually admitted to seeing Husejnovic beating his wife and confirmed that Aljic’s body remained in the home for several days. She told detectives the original plan had been to dispose of the vehicle with the body by pushing it down a cliff, but when that failed, the car was set on fire.
In an interview with police, Husejnovic confessed to striking Aljic during an argument, after which, he claimed, she ceased breathing. He alleged that Boyd advised him not to involve first responders and to leave the body in the house.
The precise cause of Aljic’s death remains under investigation as authorities await further forensic analysis.
Both Husejnovic and Boyd are being held at the Warren County Jail, with Husejnovic’s bond set at $1 million and Boyd’s at nearly $50,000. The legal process will continue as investigators work to piece together the full circumstances surrounding Aljic’s death.
