LOUISVILLE, KY – A shocking discovery in Louisville has led to the arrest of a 22-year-old woman, Daira T. Mejia Aguilar after the decomposed remains of her newborn baby were found in the trunk of her vehicle.
In a disturbing case emerging from Kentucky, officers responded on Saturday evening to a gruesome report of a deceased infant thought to be concealed in a residence on Zorn Avenue. The investigation quickly took a chilling turn when authorities found a suspicious bag swarming with flies and indications of blood.
Interrogated at the scene, Mejia Aguilar, under her legal rights, disclosed to the Louisville Metro Police Department that she had given birth the prior Tuesday. She later admitted to failing to report the death, concealing the infant’s body within her apartment, an arrest citation revealed.
The grim trail led to the recovery of the baby’s body on Sunday. Police reported that the remains of the baby, a full-term newborn showing signs of decay, were wrapped in a blanket and placed in a trash bag in the trunk of her car.
Facing severe charges for the mishandling of her child’s remains, Mejia Aguilar maintained her innocence, pleading not guilty during her initial court appearance at the Jefferson County Court of Justice.
As the community reels from this tragic situation, many questions linger regarding the circumstances leading to the infant’s death. Officials are awaiting the conclusions of the medical examiner’s autopsy to ascertain the cause and to determine if the tragic event occurred pre-birth, during labor, or postpartum.
Presently, Mejia Aguilar is confined under home incarceration and is due to return to court on July 16 as the case continues to develop.
