Shanghai, China — Johnny Walker delivered a stunning upset on Saturday at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium, knocking out local favorite Zhang Mingyang in the second round of their light heavyweight bout. Walker’s impressive performance marked a notable shift in his career, reviving his fortunes against the highly touted Zhang, who had been enjoying a remarkable 12-fight win streak.
The fight began with Zhang, making history as the first Chinese male fighter to headline a UFC event in mainland China, looking to capitalize on his momentum. However, Walker, known for his unpredictable fighting style, took an early risk by going for a takedown instead of greeting Zhang with a glove touch. While Zhang initially gained the upper hand, landing several impactful strikes, the match took a decisive turn in the second round.
With a series of powerful calf kicks, Walker disabled Zhang’s mobility and launched a relentless barrage of punches and elbows. Referee Marc Goddard stopped the contest at 2:37 into the second round, signaling Walker’s return to form after enduring a three-fight winless streak that included two knockout losses.
"Training is training, fight is fight," said Walker, a Brazilian fighter who previously trained with Zhang. "My kick is awesome, right? Now is the definition of the title fight run. I want to see the legendary Polish power [Jan Blachowicz next]."
In the co-main event, former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling showcased his dominance over Brian Ortega, winning a unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight 50-45. This contest, initially set at bantamweight, was adjusted to a catchweight of 153 pounds after Ortega struggled with the scale during weigh-ins.
Sterling, known as “Funk Master,” effectively controlled the bout, outstriking Ortega 124 to 55 in significant strikes while landing three takedowns in the last round. This victory not only marked his second win since moving up in weight class but also positioned Sterling back in the discussion for a title shot.
"I think I’ve done enough in this game," Sterling said, expressing his desire for a match against current featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski. "Volkanovski is the f***ing man, but I would love an opportunity to fight for the title again."
The night of fights in Shanghai also featured several other noteworthy bouts. Sergei Pavlovich defeated Waldo Cortes-Acosta by unanimous decision, and Sumudaerji earned a decision win over Kevin Borjas, portraying a mix of rising talent and experienced fighters pushing their way through the ranks.
Overall, Walker’s emphatic victory alongside Sterling’s commanding performance highlighted a pivotal night for fighters looking to re-establish themselves in the competitive landscape of mixed martial arts.
