Kodiak Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Sexual Abuse Case

Kodiak, Alaska – Nathan Benton, 49, was sentenced to a composite term of 12 years, with 5 years suspended and 7 years to serve for two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree by retired Supreme Court Justice Joel Bolger. This comes after Benton was convicted of two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree and two counts of sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree following a trial held in Kodiak in June 2023.

During the sentencing, both the victim and her family spoke about the impact of Benton’s actions. The victim expressed feelings of shame and isolation, suffering from nightmares, flashbacks, anger, confusion, and suicidal thoughts as a result of the abuse. Her mother also spoke, highlighting the negative impact the case had on the victim and their entire family.

Community members testified and wrote letters in support of Benton, noting his previous role as a respected coach and mentor in the community.

Assistant Attorney General Bailey Woolfstead requested a sentence of 8 years for Benton, citing the power dynamic, overt actions to silence the victim, lack of remorse, and significant impact on the victim’s life merit a strong sentence. Benton’s lawyer, Elizabeth Flemming, requested the minimum sentence, arguing for Benton’s meaningful service to the community and his remorse for his actions. Benton himself spoke, expressing deep regret and apologizing to the victim and her parents.

In handing down the sentence, Justice Bolger emphasized the prevalence of sexual abuse in rural Alaska and issued a warning to those in positions of authority. Benton was placed on probation for 10 years following his release, with requirements for sex offender treatment, and will be required to register annually as a sex offender for 15 years after his discharge from probation.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant Attorney General Bailey Woolfstead of the Office of Special Prosecutions Rural Prosecution Unit.
