NEW YORK — Albertsons Companies has initiated a recall of several deli items due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes, a move that follows recent warnings from federal health officials regarding similar concerns with prepackaged meals sold at major retailers.

The Boise, Idaho-based supermarket chain announced on Saturday that it will remove five deli products from its shelves. The affected items contain bowtie pasta supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods, which has been recalled due to the contamination risk. Shoppers are advised not to consume these products and are encouraged to return them to the store for a full refund or dispose of them safely.

The recalled items include various ready-to-eat pasta salads and entrees featuring ingredients like chicken and spinach. Customers can find specific details, including product names and sell-through dates, on Albertsons’ official website to determine if their purchases are implicated in the recall.

These items were sold in numerous Albertsons-affiliated stores, including Safeway and Von’s, spanning over a dozen states. Albertsons cautioned that listeria can thrive at refrigeration temperatures and noted the importance of thorough cleaning of any surfaces or containers that may have come in contact with the affected products.

While no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with Albertsons’ recall, concerns about listeria remain heightened across the country. Health officials recently issued alerts regarding ready-made meals, including those sold at Trader Joe’s and Walmart, which have been linked to potential contamination issues.

Last week, the U.S. Agriculture Department warned consumers against eating specific Trader Joe’s and Walmart pasta dishes after testing indicated possible listeria contamination. Although formal recalls were not issued for those products, the retailers advised customers to return or dispose of the affected items.

Like the pasta used in Albertsons’ deli products, the ingredients in the recalled meals from these other retailers also originated from Nate’s Fine Foods. Listeria infections pose serious health risks, particularly for older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and confusion.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 1,600 people in the United States fall ill from listeria each year, resulting in about 260 fatalities. As food safety continues to be a pressing concern, consumers are urged to remain vigilant regarding any updates from retailers and health officials.
