HERNDON, Va. – A woman has been arrested in connection to a double homicide in Herndon, Virginia, where a woman was stabbed and a man was shot. The incident occurred in February in a home near the Hattontown neighborhood. The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Juliana Peres Magalhaes, was working as a live-in nanny for the victims’ family. She has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently held without bond at the Adult Detention Center.
The police were called to the scene just before 8 p.m. on February 24. When officers arrived, they discovered two victims, 39-year-old Joseph Nathan Ryan and 37-year-old Christine Ann Banfield, both dead inside the home. Ryan had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene, while Banfield had been stabbed and was taken to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
According to initial reports, Banfield’s husband told dispatchers that he had shot Ryan after Ryan had allegedly stabbed his wife. However, the police department’s recent announcement indicates that it was the au pair, Magalhaes, who is believed to have shot Ryan. The motive for the stabbing of Banfield is still under investigation.
No signs of forced entry were found at the home, and Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis mentioned in February that Ryan was not a stranger to the family. The couple’s 4-year-old child was also found in the home at the time of the incident.
The police department is urging anyone with information about the crimes to contact the Major Crimes Bureau. The investigation is ongoing, and further details have not been released at this time.
