An Iowa care facility has been fined $10,000 after pronouncing a living woman dead.
The woman, who has been identified as 68-year-old Mary Wilson, was a resident at the facility, which specializes in Alzheimer’s care.
According to reports, Wilson was found unresponsive in her bed and staff members declared her dead without performing any medical tests.
The woman was then taken to a funeral home and her family was notified of her death.
However, the funeral home refused to accept the body and called for medical tests to be done.
The tests revealed that Wilson was in fact still alive and she was returned to the facility.
The Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals has now fined the facility for the incident and has ordered them to take corrective action.
The facility has apologized for the mistake and has vowed to take all necessary steps to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
