Gaza City, Gaza Strip — A humanitarian crisis is deepening in Gaza as severe malnutrition rates among children under five have surged dramatically, raising urgent concerns for the well-being of vulnerable populations. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) reports that cases of malnutrition at its clinic have tripled in recent weeks amid an escalating food crisis exacerbated by the ongoing blockade.
According to MSF, nearly one-quarter of the children and pregnant or breastfeeding women screened in their clinics were identified as malnourished last week. The charity has seen the number of individuals requiring treatment for malnutrition increase fourfold since May, highlighting the dire conditions in the region. MSF employs over 1,000 staff members across Gaza, providing essential medical services from maternity care to emergency surgeries.
The organization attributes the worsening crisis to what it describes as a deliberate Israeli policy to restrict food and medical supplies. As the situation deteriorates, more than 100 humanitarian organizations have united in condemnation of the blockade that limits aid deliveries into the territory.
“Patients and healthcare workers are struggling for survival as the use of starvation escalates to unprecedented levels,” MSF stated in a recent communication. Gaza health authorities have reported at least 122 confirmed starvation-related deaths, with nine fatalities occurring in just the past day.
A startling report from the World Food Programme indicates that nearly one-third of Gaza’s population has gone days without food, signaling a dramatic escalation of desperation. The organization stresses that approximately 90,000 women and children desperately need immediate nutritional support.
Naji al-Qurashali, a Gaza-based obstetrician-gynecologist, warns that the real extent of the unfolding crisis may not be fully captured by statistics. He estimates that half of the pregnant women he encounters daily are affected by malnutrition. “This level of malnutrition was unimaginable earlier in my career,” he said, adding that he has witnessed a significant rise in miscarriages as women struggle to secure sufficient nourishment.
Medical facilities face critical shortages of supplies, resulting in doctors resorting to using expired medications and unsanitary equipment. “As a doctor, it is devastating to see patients without even the most basic medical provisions,” Qurashali lamented.
In response to the growing unrest, Israel has denied responsibility for the worsening conditions and has placed blame on the United Nations for its inability to effectively distribute aid. UN Secretary-General António Guterres criticized the international community for what he termed a “lack of humanity” in light of the dire situation in Gaza, calling it a moral crisis that challenges global conscience.
Meanwhile, leaders from the UK, France, and Germany have jointly urged Israel to end the humanitarian catastrophe by lifting restrictions on aid. The French president has proposed recognizing Palestinian statehood in the upcoming UN General Assembly, a move that has drawn significant attention amid the unfolding tragedy.
As negotiations for a ceasefire appear to have collapsed, hope for alleviating the humanitarian situation dims. Amidst this chaos, the voices of the most affected, such as Amal Masri, a pregnant mother struggling to find food, underscore the urgent need for action. “I often feel like I’m on the verge of death,” she said, reflecting the overwhelming despair that blankets Gaza as resources dwindle and the future remains uncertain.
The push for aid to flow more efficiently into Gaza continues, but delays in negotiation processes raise doubts about immediate relief for the besieged population. As the humanitarian crisis deepens, the international community faces mounting pressure to respond effectively to the urgent needs of those suffering.
