Man Sentenced to 60 Years for Fatally Shooting Ex-Girlfriend in Walterboro

WALTERBORO, SC – A Walterboro man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Donasia Alexus Holloway. Justin Cole Carroll, 24, was found guilty by a Colleton County General Sessions Court jury, as confirmed by the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Circuit Court Judge Robert Bonds presided over the sentencing.

Holloway was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of Carroll, who had a history of aggressiveness towards her. Despite her efforts to end the toxic relationship and protect herself with a no-contact order, Carroll persistently pursued her. At the time of the fatal shooting, Carroll was already facing charges for domestic assault against Holloway.

On the evening of May 22, 2021, witnesses saw Carroll following Holloway in his vehicle as she returned home. Holloway, fearing for her safety, sought refuge in her car and even recorded a video on Snapchat expressing her concerns. Tragically, she was fatally shot four times by Carroll with a handgun shortly after.

Investigators later discovered compelling evidence linking Carroll to the crime, including gunshot residue found on his hand and signs of phone tampering prior to the murder. Despite initially denying involvement, Carroll was eventually arrested two days after the incident took place.

Carroll’s violent past came to light, with a previous conviction for assault and battery in 2016. He had also been in trouble with the law for unlawful possession of a firearm and drugs, resulting in a three-year prison sentence. His release coincided with his relationship with Holloway.

The tragic loss of Holloway serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of domestic violence. The prosecution emphasized the need for accountability in cases of intimate partner violence to prevent further tragedies like this from occurring. Carroll’s sentencing sends a strong message that such actions will not go unpunished.
