Man stabs girlfriend; claims she attacked him for chopping onions wrong

GRABILL, IN – A violent domestic dispute over onion chopping ended in tragedy when a 60-year-old Indiana man was arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, a former magistrate, at a home in Grabill. Charles Michael Calvert is now facing murder charges after the incident on Saturday night.

The local community is reeling from the loss of Marcia Linksy, who was found deceased from apparent stab wounds. Allen County Chief Public Defender Bill LeBrato spoke highly of Linksy, “As good of an attorney as she was, she was ten times better of a person,” he said, emphasizing the depth of the loss felt by many.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the sequence of events leading to Linksy’s death involved a dispute and escalated violence. Calvert had called 911 around 8:30 p.m., claiming that the altercation arose when he and Linksy each held a knife during an argument about how to cut onions. He stated that Linksy had “came at him” and that she was “no longer with us,” implying that he acted in self-defense.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found Linksy facedown with severe injuries, surrounded by signs of a struggle, including a disheveled kitchen, a broken crockpot, and bloodied knives. Investigators found suspicious evidence suggesting that the crime scene might have been altered post-incident and noted inconsistencies in Calvert’s retelling of the event. Notably, there were no chopped onions found in the kitchen, though onion peels were discovered in the trash, and one of the knives on the floor seemed out of place. Furthermore, a 911 recording indicated that Calvert had remarked about his inevitable jail stay, which could imply a level of premeditation or awareness of guilt.

Before serving as a defense attorney with Close & Hitchcock, LLP, Linksy had built a career as a prosecutor and a magistrate. Her law firm remembered her as an inspiration, acknowledging the irreplaceable void her passing has created. They also reassured clients of the firm’s continued commitment to quality legal representation amidst the tragedy.

Calvert is presently held without bond in Allen County Jail. As of the last report, it remained unclear whether he had acquired legal representation to address the charges against him.
