Man Suspected of Killing Six People Tries Escaping Jail After Arrest

AUSTIN, Texas – A man suspected of a shooting rampage in Austin and San Antonio is facing a charge of capital murder, and attempted to escape from jail following his arrest, according to a sheriff’s official. Shane James Jr., 34, has been charged in the wake of Tuesday’s killings in the two Texas cities.

The suspect attempted to flee from the Travis County Jail in Austin on Wednesday by pushing past a corrections officer, according to Kristen Dark, a spokesperson for the county sheriff’s office. James then attempted to run into a hallway before being restrained by officers. Dark emphasized that the jail is a secure facility and the suspect would not have been able to escape the building.

Two of the victims, Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56, have been tentatively identified as the suspect’s parents, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar. Investigators believe they were killed in a shooting at their San Antonio home sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

The suspect is also suspected of killing four other people in Austin. Emmanuel Pop Ba, 32, and Sabrina Rahman, 24, were found shot in a neighborhood at around midday Tuesday. Pop Ba died at the scene, while Rahman died at a hospital. Additionally, Catherine Short, 56, and Lauren Short, 30, were killed inside a residence later that evening.

The suspect was arrested after being involved in a police pursuit and crashing his vehicle. It is important to note that the officers handling the arrest were not seriously injured.
