SHEPHERD, Texas (AP) – A large plant fire broke out on FM 1127 in Shepherd, Texas on Wednesday morning, leaving one worker injured and prompting multiple fire agencies to respond.

The San Jacinto County Precinct 2 Constable shared photos of thick, black smoke coming from the area at around 8:45 a.m. Officials received reports of a possible explosion at Sound Resource Solutions, which manufactures solvents for glue and paint remover. A 1000-gallon propane tank and a four-inch natural gas main were reportedly involved in the fire.

According to ABC13’s investigative reporter Kevin Ozebek, a current employee stated that the injured worker sustained second-degree burns to his arms and first-degree burns to his face in a “freak accident” caused by a forklift incident. However, the injured employee is reportedly in good spirits and expected to recover.

Officials confirmed that all employees at Sound Resource Solutions were accounted for, with only one suffering a minor injury. The fire involved flammable liquids, diesel, turpentine, and other chemicals, some of which are known to be toxic.

Residents within a one-mile radius of the fire were asked to shelter in place, and several school districts in the area were impacted, with some students being safely evacuated. Power outages and traffic closures were also reported as emergency personnel worked to contain the fire.
