A shocking video of Memphis police officers beating Tyre Nichols has prompted widespread horror and outrage.
The video, which was released by Memphis authorities on Tuesday, shows officers repeatedly striking Nichols as he lay handcuffed on the ground. The incident occurred during a traffic stop on January 24th.
The family of Tyre Nichols has also reported that the officers smoked cigarettes after the fatal beating.
In response to the video, Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway posted an apology on Instagram, saying he was “sickened and heartbroken” by the video.
In a statement, The Guardian said the killing of Tyre Nichols was “heinous and shocking, but it was also not an aberration.” The statement went on to say that “the video is a stark reminder of the systemic racism that has plagued our communities for too long.”
