Police say Brianna Moore shot a former boyfriend in both legs after an encounter outside the Austin Peay precinct turned violent.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A meeting to return house keys ended in gunfire outside a Memphis police station, leaving a man critically wounded and a 24-year-old woman facing three criminal charges after officers said one of the bullets also struck the precinct building.
Brianna Moore was charged with aggravated assault, domestic assault involving bodily harm and reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon after the Sept. 6 confrontation outside the Memphis Police Department’s Austin Peay precinct. Police accounts describe an encounter that unfolded within steps of officers but remains disputed in important respects: The wounded man acknowledged trying to grab Moore, while another person who was with Moore told investigators that the man had first struck her in the back of the head and was moving toward her again when she opened fire.
Officers were inside the precinct shortly before 4:30 p.m. when they heard several gunshots outside, according to accounts based on a probable cause affidavit. A witness entered the station and told police that a man had been shot. The witness reported seeing a silver Honda arrive near a black Nissan before a woman got out from the Honda’s passenger side, approached the Nissan and fired at the man. The woman then returned to the Honda, according to the witness’s account. The wounded man managed to get back into his Nissan and leave the immediate scene.
Police later found the man at Methodist North Hospital with multiple gunshot wounds to both legs. Reports identified him only as Moore’s boyfriend or former boyfriend and did not publicly name him. He told investigators that he had gone to the precinct to retrieve his house key from Moore. According to the affidavit account, he said that after getting the key, he left his vehicle and attempted to grab Moore. He said she then shot him. Available reports said he was in critical condition after the shooting, but a later verified update on his medical condition was not located.
Moore and a passenger in the Honda gave police a different description of what happened immediately before the gunfire. Moore told investigators that the man was her ex-boyfriend and that the relationship had recently ended. She said they had arranged the meeting so she could return his keys. The passenger said Moore approached the man’s vehicle for that purpose before the man struck Moore in the back of the head hard enough to knock off her glasses. The passenger further told police that the man moved toward Moore again after the alleged blow.
It was at that point, the passenger said, that Moore pulled a black handgun from her bra and fired several times. Police said Moore later acknowledged shooting the man but maintained that she did so after he assaulted her. The available reports do not establish a final legal finding about who initiated the physical confrontation, whether Moore’s use of force was legally justified or how prosecutors will address the competing accounts. Those questions are significant because police still arrested Moore and lodged criminal charges after investigating the scene and interviewing the people involved.
The location made the gunfire dangerous beyond the two people involved in the dispute. Investigators said one round passed through a front window of the Austin Peay precinct while multiple officers were inside. Police recovered a bullet fragment and four spent 9 mm cartridge casings around the scene, according to the affidavit. No officer was reported wounded. The strike on the station became part of the basis for the allegation that Moore recklessly endangered others with a deadly weapon, although the ultimate facts and legal responsibility remain matters for the court process.
Police also recovered a firearm after the shooting. Officers stopped the silver Honda in the precinct parking lot, and local reporting said two women were initially taken into custody. Investigators later searched the vehicle under a warrant and recovered a black Taurus G3C 9 mm handgun from the front seat, according to the police account. Authorities linked the weapon and casings to their investigation, but the publicly available reports reviewed for this story did not disclose a completed laboratory analysis, additional ballistic findings or surveillance video establishing every movement before the shots were fired.
The charges against Moore address different parts of the alleged encounter. Aggravated assault is tied to the accusation that she intentionally or knowingly caused or threatened serious harm with a weapon. The domestic assault charge reflects police treatment of the dispute as involving people who had been in an intimate relationship. Reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon concerns the alleged danger created for other people, including those inside the station when a bullet entered the building. Filing those charges is an accusation, not a finding that Moore committed the offenses.
The evidence described publicly also leaves investigators with several accounts to compare. An outside witness described seeing the woman approach and begin shooting but, in the portions of the affidavit reported publicly, did not provide the same description of the alleged blow to Moore’s head that came from her passenger. The wounded man admitted attempting to grab Moore but described the sequence differently from the passenger. Moore’s own statement placed the shooting after an assault. The reports reviewed did not disclose whether officers documented visible injuries to Moore or whether photographs, medical records or additional witnesses supported either version.
The decision to meet at a police precinct did not prevent the dispute from becoming violent. The available record does not explain why the two selected that particular location beyond their plan to exchange the man’s keys, nor does it establish that officers had been asked to supervise the meeting. Police were inside the building when the shots were fired and became aware of the confrontation after hearing gunfire and receiving a witness’s report. There is also no verified indication in the reviewed material that officers fired their weapons during the incident or that anyone other than the man was physically injured.
Moore was taken to jail after being interviewed by investigators. Early reports said she was being held on a $125,000 bond. One initial local report published before the bond information was updated said no bond had yet been set, but subsequent reports listed the $125,000 amount. Public reporting at that stage did not identify an attorney speaking on Moore’s behalf, a plea, a trial date or a judicial ruling on any claim of self-defense. Those omissions matter because Moore’s statement to investigators and the passenger’s account describe circumstances that could become contested issues as the case proceeds.
The Sept. 6 shooting therefore remains both a criminal case and a disputed account of a rapidly escalating encounter. What appears undisputed in the reports is that Moore met the man outside the precinct to return keys, gunfire followed, the man was struck multiple times in both legs, investigators recovered a handgun and casings, and a round entered the police station. What remains unresolved is the precise sequence of physical contact before the shooting and how that sequence will affect Moore’s criminal liability. No later verified court disposition or updated medical outcome was located in the sources reviewed as of Oct. 20.
