MIAMI, FL – A Miami woman faces criminal charges after law enforcement officials say she shot her son outside a popular restaurant on Christmas Day during a heated family argument.

According to investigators, the incident took place outside Red Rooster restaurant in Overtown, where the woman, identified as Smith, and her son had gathered with family members for brunch. Authorities say an argument erupted inside the restaurant, reportedly after Smith felt her son was being disrespectful to her and other relatives.

The confrontation did not end inside. Witnesses report that shortly after 3 p.m., the disagreement continued as Smith and her son left the restaurant and moved to the parking area. Police say the argument escalated as both got into Smith’s vehicle, but tensions flared further, prompting the son to get out of the car.

As the dispute spilled outside the vehicle, authorities allege Smith followed her son, drew a firearm, and fired once, hitting him in the left thigh. First responders arrived to find the victim on the ground, bleeding from the wound.

Paramedics provided immediate treatment before transporting the son to a local hospital. He was listed in stable condition, according to hospital officials.

Smith fled the scene following the shooting, police said. Officers launched a search and located her later the same day. Upon apprehension, Smith claimed she had acted in self-defense, telling investigators her son had threatened to physically assault her after refusing to get out of her car.

According to police records, Smith said she was fearful of her son, referencing prior incidents of alleged aggressive behavior. She said her actions were motivated by concern for her personal safety.
