Amanda Karolkiewicz wrote about infidelity and marital problems years before authorities say her husband killed her and their six children.

GRAND HAVEN TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Years before Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz and her six children were found dead in their fire-damaged Michigan home, she described a marriage shaken by infidelity, fear about leaving and what she called serious warning signs. Those writings have emerged as investigators continue trying to determine why her husband killed the family before dying by suicide.

The online posts offer a documented look at troubles inside the Karolkiewicz marriage, but authorities have not identified them as a motive for the killings. The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office determined that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally shot Amanda, 39, and their six children, who ranged in age from 5 to 15. Investigators said he then intentionally set fires in several areas of the Grand Haven Township home and fatally shot himself. Autopsies classified Amanda’s death and the children’s deaths as homicides and Kristopher’s death as a suicide. Detectives have continued examining what happened in the hours before the family was discovered.

Amanda’s writings gained attention after reporters linked a Reddit account to her through details about her family, marriage and employment. In posts published before her death, she said she had met Kristopher while she was an intern and he was older and divorced. She later alleged that, years into their marriage, he became involved with another intern who was about the age Amanda had been when the couple first met. The account described the discovery as a painful break in a marriage that by then included several children. The reported affair has not been independently identified by investigators as connected to the killings, and law enforcement has not publicly announced evidence establishing a motive.

Her posts described a complicated decision to remain in the marriage and attempt reconciliation. In one, Amanda wrote, “I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now,” explaining that her children weighed heavily in her choice to keep trying. Elsewhere, she described the thought of leaving with six children as frightening and said she had overlooked “major red flags” earlier in the relationship. She also wrote about counseling and her belief that Kristopher sometimes reacted defensively to difficult conversations. The posts provide her own account of the marriage at the time they were written; they do not establish what Kristopher was thinking before the deaths or what events, if any, immediately preceded the shootings.

The distinction matters because investigators have been careful about what they say they know. Deputies and firefighters were first sent to the Riverside Trail area on the morning of July 24 after callers reported smelling smoke. Responders initially could not find an obvious source. About three hours later, emergency crews returned after receiving reports of smoke coming from the Karolkiewicz home. Firefighters entered the residence and found the eight family members. Investigators later determined that all eight had suffered gunshot wounds and that the fires began after Amanda and the children had been killed. Authorities said they found no evidence that another suspect was involved.

Later investigative reporting added details about the preparations and conditions inside the house without resolving the central question of why the killings occurred. The Holland Sentinel reported that authorities confirmed Kristopher purchased the handgun used in the killings on July 16, about eight days before the family was found. A Michigan State Police fire investigation determined that fires had been deliberately started in several locations throughout the home. Investigators also found that multiple smoke alarms had been removed. Those facts form part of the developing chronology, but authorities have not publicly said what they reveal about motive or precisely when a decision to kill the family was made.

The picture of Amanda found outside the investigation was notably different from the private distress expressed in her Reddit posts. She worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, where school officials had previously recognized her for showing patience, empathy and particular concern for students going through difficult days. She also documented family life online and wrote about motherhood, faith and raising six children. Shortly before her death, she traveled to China with her adopted daughters, Caroline and Ella, and posted about the trip and the importance of their Chinese heritage. Family members later emphasized those parts of her life as they prepared to memorialize her and the children.

The six children were four boys and two girls. Law enforcement initially declined to release their names, although relatives and later funeral notices publicly identified them as Keegan, Bennett, Caroline, Ella, Smith and Teddy. They ranged from 5 to 15. Family memorials described children interested in sports, music, swimming, cooking, cars and time with their siblings and grandparents. The personalized remembrances shifted some public attention away from the circumstances of their deaths and toward the lives they had led, a priority relatives also stressed before a public celebration of life held Aug. 24 in Grand Haven.

Kristopher had most recently worked for the American Heart Association as national vice president of sales and marketing. The organization said his employment, which began in September 2023, ended earlier in July. It declined to explain the circumstances, citing personnel policy. No law enforcement agency has said whether the end of his employment had any connection to the killings. That unanswered question joins the marital problems described by Amanda, the recent gun purchase and other facts that investigators have gathered but have not publicly assembled into an explanation of motive.

Amanda’s parents, Becky and Steve Lawwill, described her after the deaths as a kind and devoted person who loved her family and her students. The Grand Haven school district also made counseling and support available to students and staff affected by the loss. In August, relatives established the Mandy Karolkiewicz Family Foundation Fund, intended in part to support music and arts opportunities and help meet everyday student needs in the community. The family asked that the Aug. 24 memorial center on Amanda and her children rather than on Kristopher or the violence that ended their lives.

The case therefore contains two distinct records that investigators and the public are still trying to understand. One is the physical evidence: eight gunshot deaths, multiple intentionally set fires, a recently purchased handgun and a home in which investigators reported no evidence of another attacker. The other is the record Amanda left herself, including writings about betrayal, reconciliation and concerns about her husband’s behavior. The second record may help describe the state of their marriage, but it does not by itself answer the investigative question raised by the first. Police have not said that an affair, marital conflict, employment problems or any combination of those circumstances caused the killings.

Authorities have said the investigation remains open as detectives continue reconstructing the period before the deaths and reviewing the evidence collected from the home and other records. With Kristopher dead, there will be no criminal prosecution in which prosecutors would be required to present a theory of the killings in court. For now, the most consequential unanswered question remains motive. Amanda’s posts document that serious problems existed in the marriage, but investigators have not publicly established what led Kristopher to kill his wife and six children.
