FLINT, MI – A Michigan judge expressed frustration on Monday over a plea deal sentence for two teenagers convicted in the brutal 2023 murder of their roommate, stating it fell short of appropriately addressing the severity of the crime.
Judge Mark Latchana, presiding over the case in Michigan’s Seventh Circuit Court, directly addressed 19-year-old Jacob Blain and 18-year-old Willow Reynolds during sentencing. Both had pled guilty to charges of second-degree murder and armed robbery in the death of 44-year-old Adam Reynolds, who shared a home with them.
“This arrangement is the product of negotiation,” Latchana stated, emphasizing his belief that the agreement was insufficient in light of the violence inflicted upon the victim.
Court documents reveal the gruesome nature of the crime, where Blain and Reynolds allegedly attacked Adam Reynolds by stabbing him and beating him with a shovel. Mace was also used during the assault, reportedly initiated due to a disagreement over household rules.
Before sentencing, the courtroom fell silent as family members of the victim recounted their memories of Adam Reynolds, their words turning the attention back to the difficult reality of his loss.
Both defendants expressed remorse for their actions. However, Latchana expressed doubt over the adequacy of their apology, particularly toward Blain, whom he admonished for his inattention during the proceedings. “Mr. Blain — look at me when I’m talking to you, sir,” the judge insisted, urging him to acknowledge the weight of his actions.
Throughout his address, Judge Latchana grappled with the constraints of the plea deal, “The agreement doesn’t align with the maximum sentence possible, and that’s troubling.”
Despite the judge’s evident displeasure, the final sentencing aligned with the plea agreement, assigning both Blain and Reynolds 20 to 100 years in prison, with 291 days of credit for time served. Restitution to the victim’s family was also mandated.
Latchana acknowledged the defendants’ acceptance of responsibility and the avoidance of a trial, “That aspect at least spares the family further grief.”
The sentence concluded Judge Latchana’s comments on the disturbing case, underlining the complexities and limitations of the criminal justice system when addressing such violent crimes.
