Michigan woman tortured by boyfriend who holds her captive and leaves her brain dead

CARROLLTON TOWNSHIP, MI – A man from Michigan is now potentially facing a murder charge following the death of his alleged victim, who succumbed after spending several months hospitalized.

Kelley LaLonde, 35, was declared dead on May 26, according to a GoFundMe page set up for her funeral expenses. LaLonde’s death comes after suffering a brutal attack in September 2024, allegedly at the hands of Jonathan M. Zieroff, 30. Initially charged with assault with intent to murder, Zieroff became the subject of an additional charge of torture shortly before LaLonde was declared brain-dead on May 13.

Known for her lively spirit, LaLonde was fondly remembered for her love of singing, dancing, and classic television. Her admiration for Elvis Presley and Michigan Football played a big part in her life. She leaves behind three children, ages 14, 11, and 3.

The unfolding case traces back to the concerns of LaLonde’s mother, who reported her daughter missing after five days of unanswered calls and missed work. Police discovered LaLonde in Zieroff’s Carrollton Township home in dire condition. She was found unresponsive amidst tragic circumstances that indicated severe suffering.

Medical evaluations highlighted the extent of LaLonde’s injuries. She sustained a skull fracture and numerous bruises on her limbs and exhibited severe trauma. Investigators were led to suspect Zieroff after learning from LaLonde’s mother that her daughter had shown signs of abuse from him in the past.

Zieroff evaded immediate capture upon police arrival but was apprehended the following day. Authorities traced him via his cell phone in a nearby wooded area. Currently, he is in custody at the Saginaw County Jail, held on a $50,000 bond while awaiting trial.

An autopsy and toxicological exam are underway to pinpoint the precise cause of LaLonde’s death, which will guide the prosecution in deciding whether to elevate charges against Zieroff. Saginaw County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Blair N. Stevenson indicated that this decision could take up to three weeks.

Zieroff faces existing charges of assault with the intent to do great bodily harm and second-offense aggravated domestic violence. His next court appearance is scheduled for July 3.

Prosecutors remain determined to thoroughly examine all evidence as they await the medical findings, which are crucial to determining the course of legal action in this tragic case.
