ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan football’s head coach Sherrone Moore faces a two-game suspension amid self-imposed penalties tied to an advanced scouting controversy involving former staffer Connor Stalions. Sources indicate that Moore will miss games in Weeks 3 and 4 of the upcoming season against Central Michigan and Nebraska.

As part of the sanctions, Moore will also be disqualified from any team-related activities during those weeks and will encounter additional recruiting restrictions. The NCAA retains the authority to impose its own penalties, with a final decision anticipated prior to the season kickoff.

The Wolverines will start their season hosting New Mexico before traveling to Oklahoma, Moore’s alma mater, for a high-stakes non-conference matchup. The second-year head coach previously served as the team’s offensive coordinator when the allegations against Stalions first surfaced. Stalions was accused of orchestrating a scheme that involved having associates film the sideline signals of Michigan’s future adversaries.

In August 2024, a Notice of Allegations was issued by the NCAA, highlighting 11 violations against the university, with six categorized as the most serious, Level I offenses. Both Michigan and the NCAA are engaged in negotiations to resolve this matter.

Moore’s current suspension stems from allegations surrounding the destruction of a text message thread that included 52 messages exchanged with Stalions. These alleged deletions took place in October 2023, coinciding with revelations that Stalions was attempting to acquire opposing teams’ play signals. Reports indicate that some of the erased texts were later retrieved through device imaging, leading to Moore being accused of a Level 2 violation.

Previously, Moore received a suspension for the opening game of the 2023 season against East Carolina due to separate NCAA issues. The scheduling of his current penalties allows him to be present for the significant matchup against Oklahoma, where he had a successful college career from 2006 to 2008.
