Migrant caught on camera carrying Syracuse woman murdered on her 21st birthday

SYRACUSE, NY – A young man is facing serious charges after a woman was tragically found dead in a Syracuse park. At 21 years of age, Jhon Moises Chacaguasay-Ilbis stands accused of second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse following the discovery of Joselyn Toaquiza’s body.

Toaquiza, also 21, was reportedly killed by strangulation on the day she celebrated her birthday. Her remains were located in Lincoln Park on June 22, prompting an immediate investigation by authorities.

During his arraignment in Syracuse City Court, where the judge ordered camera restrictions, Chacaguasay-Ilbis, who required a Spanish interpreter, claimed to have no recollection of the event, citing alcohol impairment. The proceedings were brief, concluding in about five minutes, with the suspect entering a plea of not guilty.

Details from the felony complaint reveal disturbing actions alleged against Chacaguasay-Ilbis, suggesting he strangled Toaquiza before hiding her body amidst dense brush in a secluded woodland area.

As the local community grapples with the shock and sorrow of Toaquiza’s untimely death, many gathered close to where her body was found to remember her life. Described by co-worker Christopher Renna as a vivacious and kindly individual, Toaquiza leaves behind memories of a person who always met others with a bright smile.

Evidence points to a romantic connection between the slain young woman and Chacaguasay-Ilbis. Disturbing surveillance footage captured the pair entering an Airbnb, followed by a scene of Toaquiza being carried out unnoticed by passing policemen.

Currently held without bail at the Onondaga County Justice Center, Chacaguasay-Ilbis is scheduled to return to court on July 2.
