Tokyo, Japan — Japanese defense forces have heightened their alert status following a series of joint military flights conducted by Russian and Chinese air forces in the vicinity of the nation. The Japanese Defense Ministry reported that two Russian Tu-95 bombers collaborated with two Chinese H-6 bombers, marking a significant show of military cooperation between the two countries amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region.

The aircraft, which are capable of carrying nuclear payloads, flew from the Sea of Japan toward the East China Sea, where they executed a coordinated mission over the Pacific. They were joined by four Chinese J-16 fighter jets, which participated in a round-trip sortie between Okinawa and Miyako Islands—territory that is classified as international waters. This joint operation underscores a closer military partnership between Beijing and Moscow.

In addition to this exercise, Japan’s defense apparatus identified concurrent activities from the Russian air force in the Sea of Japan, which included an A-50 early-warning aircraft and two Su-30 fighter jets. Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized the seriousness of these developments, describing the joint maneuvers as a calculated display of force directed at Japan.

Koizumi took to social media to express concerns about national security implications. He stated that Japan’s fighter jets adhered to strict air defense identification protocols to monitor the ongoing situation. Russian media outlets reported that the coordination between the Russian and Chinese forces lasted for eight hours, as indicated by the Russian Defense Ministry. This military engagement has not only drawn attention in Japan but also prompted reactions from neighboring countries.

South Korea’s military also observed increased air activity, reporting that seven Russian and two Chinese planes breached its air defense identification zone shortly after the flights near Japan. Such intrusions into national airspaces raise alarms regarding regional security and cooperation among these nations.

The situation has further deteriorated, with Japan claiming that Chinese carrier-based fighter jets targeted its military aircraft with radar, a characterization that Beijing has denied. Recently, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi remarked that Japan would consider a response to any Chinese military actions perceived as hostile toward Taiwan and its own security.
