MAPLETON, MN – A Minnesota man faces charges after allegedly stabbing his father to death before leaving the scene in a drunken state. Authorities arrested Troy Blaine Almhjeld, 47, on Tuesday, charging him with second-degree murder following the death of his father, 71-year-old Blaine Lars Almhjeld.
The incident came to light in the early hours of June 3, 2025, when deputies responded to a 911 call about an abandoned vehicle on Highway 22 South, near the Terrace View Golf Course, approximately 80 miles southwest of Minneapolis. The caller reported that the driver, later identified as Troy Almhjeld, had veered off the road and appeared intoxicated while attempting to hitch a ride north along the highway.
Initial searches by local deputies and state troopers failed to locate Troy. A check on the vehicle’s registration led authorities to Blaine Almhjeld’s home on Silver Street West in Mapleton. There, police found him dead, exhibiting multiple stab wounds and other trauma.
Further investigation revealed that Troy lived with his father, prompting a manhunt that eventually led to his capture. Police say he emerged from nearby woods and approached deputies, after which he was apprehended. The situation escalated quickly after evidence linked him to the crime.
Court records indicate that deputies found the elder Almhjeld’s body just inside the door, which was ajar, and noticed significant blood and puncture wounds.
A kitchen knife recovered at the scene matched these injuries. Upon being apprehended, Troy Almhjeld reportedly provided a questionable account involving another driver forcing him off the road, claiming he had been in the water before reappearing near the scene.
During questioning, Troy asked about his father’s condition, suggesting a recent argument had occurred between them. He hinted at unexplained tensions, reportedly telling authorities, “All kind of weird stuff was going on.”
Troy Almhjeld remains in custody, awaiting a court appearance scheduled for Thursday as investigations continue into the circumstances of this alleged patricide.
