Modern Prairie: Melissa Gilbert Celebrates Aging and Empowers Women with New App and Lifestyle Site

Melissa Gilbert, known for her role as “Half Pint” in “Little House on the Prairie,” has started a lifestyle website geared toward women in their sixties and older. The lifestyle website, named Modern Prairie, was co-founded a year and a half ago and is focused on connecting women. It covers topics such as aging, stories about grandchildren, living with grief, and more. After experiencing many significant life changes, including a divorce and health issues, Gilbert shifted her focus away from her physical appearance and decided to embrace herself as she is.

Gilbert’s foundational career on the screen was influenced by societal pressure to morph her natural appearance. This included surgery and other cosmetic procedures to fit an idealized image. Over a decade ago, she appeared on “Dancing with the Stars” and felt a disconnect with her appearance. This led her to question how she wanted to live her life and rethink her values.

Gilbert’s newest venture, Modern Prairie, features a blog and virtual classes. The program encourages women to embrace themselves and make themselves visible. The items for sale on the site are made and sold by women-owned companies. The emphasis on her website is on health and acceptance rather than “anti-aging.”

The site also has items for children, named after her four grandchildren. The site provides a nod to the nostalgia of the “Little House” series, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year. As Gilbert celebrates aging, she continues to maintain her health and care about her appearance without conforming to societal standards.
