Mom’s boyfriend beats 2-year-old Colorado girl to death but claims she just liked to jump on the bed

DENVER, CO – Authorities in Denver have charged two people in connection with the death of a 2-year-old girl, whose body was discovered over the weekend at a home on the city’s west side. The arrests follow a harrowing investigation into what police describe as a fatal case of child abuse.

Denver police responded to a 911 call early Sunday morning reporting an unresponsive toddler at a residence on South Vrain Street. When first responders arrived, they found the child dead at the scene. The victim was later identified by officials as Valkyrie Erickson.

Nicholas Stout, 38, who was reportedly the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was arrested later that day. He faces charges of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. The child’s mother, Melissa Wayne, also 38, was taken into custody two days later. She has been charged with child abuse resulting in death.

Court documents reveal disturbing allegations that led authorities to suspect foul play. According to affidavits, Stout initially told investigators Valkyrie had sustained her fatal injuries by accident, claiming she was an active and adventurous child who had fallen while jumping on the bed. He explained that he attempted to prevent her from falling, but that she struck her head on a piece of furniture during the incident.

Investigators say Stout also told them he had left the house around midnight to purchase cigarettes, attempting to suggest he was not present during the critical period. However, his version of events did not match accounts provided by others living in the home.

A housemate, who had recently moved into the residence, informed detectives that Stout was frequently heard yelling at Valkyrie, with his anger often punctuated by slapping sounds coming from the bedroom. The witness described a particularly troubling sequence late Friday night, reporting that Stout could be heard shouting profanities at the toddler before the house suddenly became quiet.

Statements gathered from people familiar with Stout painted a troubling picture. Several described him as quick-tempered, volatile, and prone to unpredictable outbursts. Police records noted that other residents typically avoided interactions with him due to his aggressive demeanor.

Following his arrest, Stout appeared in court, where a judge denied him bond. Wayne remains in custody as investigations continue.

Authorities have not released further details regarding Valkyrie’s cause of death as the case remains under review by the medical examiner. Detectives continue their work, piecing together the circumstances that led to the death of the young child.

Both Stout and Wayne are expected to return to court in the coming weeks. The investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare the case.
