MURDER: 33-year-old woman fatally shot by estranged husband in Pearlridge Center parking lot

HONOLULU, Hawaii (AP) — A 33-year-old woman was fatally shot in a parking lot near Pearlridge Center on Friday morning, according to Honolulu Police Department. The shopping center was reportedly crowded with shoppers at the time of the incident, around 10 a.m. The original call to police was for suspicious circumstances, but officers discovered the woman in the parking lot with fatal gunshot wounds upon arrival.

The victim has been identified as Theresa Cachuela by her family. Honolulu Police Department initiated a search for her 44-year-old estranged husband, Jason Cachuela. A few hours later, Jason was found dead behind a Waipahu residence, and a gun was recovered at the scene. The case has now been classified as Murder in the First Degree.

According to Theresa’s family, she was with her 11-year-old daughter and on her way to the bank when her estranged husband appeared in the parking lot. Theresa’s 15-year-old son, Tyzen Gante, was informed about the incident by his sister and immediately went to the scene. He expressed frustration over the system, stating that his mother had filed a temporary restraining order against her husband, which was recently finalized, including a mandate for Jason to surrender any firearms.

Theresa’s attorney, Michael Green, stated that she had expressed concern about Jason harming himself, prompting the TRO. He revealed that there were no dramatic legal issues before the court, and the message he received was that Theresa loved Jason but was worried for his safety. The one-year order for protection took effect on Wednesday, December 20.

Theresa’s family described her as a strong and independent woman who never feared anyone except for God. Her son expressed love for his mother and criticized the system for failing to prevent the tragedy. The circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be investigated by the authorities.
