Murder Charges Filed Against Au Pair in Fairfax County Double Homicide

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – A 23-year-old au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, has been charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Joseph Ryan, according to Fairfax County police. The incident occurred in February of this year, and after a seven-month investigation, Magalhaes is now facing charges for her alleged involvement. The crime took place at a residence in the 13200 block of Stable Brook Way.

The investigation began on the morning of February 25 when police received a 911 call from the home. The first call was disconnected, but a second call was made 13 minutes later with both Magalhaes and the homeowner on the line. Initially, Magalhaes stated that her friend was injured, but the homeowner later claimed that he shot an unknown man who had entered the home and stabbed his wife.

Upon arriving at the scene, detectives found an appalling scene. Ryan, who the homeowner accused of being the intruder who had stabbed his wife, was discovered dead in an upstairs bedroom with multiple gunshot wounds. The homeowner’s wife, Christine Banfield, was found nearby with multiple stab wounds. Despite medical attention, she was pronounced dead shortly after.

During the investigation, a 4-year-old girl was found unharmed inside the residence and was safely taken from the scene by police. Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that Magalhaes cooperated with investigators, while the homeowner initially refused to speak with them. Police have not provided details about the relationship between Magalhaes, Ryan, and the homeowners, nor have they disclosed the motive for the shooting.

Based on forensic evidence and interviews, investigators have determined that Magalhaes shot Ryan. She has been charged with second-degree murder and is currently being held without bond at the adult detention center. The investigation is ongoing, with detectives continuing to interview witnesses and review digital and forensic evidence to establish the circumstances leading up to Banfield’s fatal stabbing.

The name of the homeowner involved in the incident has not been released. Police are urging anyone with additional information about the case to come forward and contact them at 703-246-7800.
