Murderous Ex-Cop Pleads Guilty in Philadelphia Boy’s Killing

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – A former Philadelphia Police officer has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder in the tragic killing of a 12-year-old boy in March 2022. Edsaul Mendoza, aged 29, admitted guilt in court to charges of third-degree murder and possession of an instrument of crimes. His sentencing is scheduled for July 22, as detailed in court records.

Mendoza’s guilty plea stems from the shooting incident that resulted in the death of Thomas “TJ” Siderio on March 1, 2022. The event unfolded around 7:24 p.m. when Mendoza and three other plainclothes officers, driving an unmarked vehicle, were investigating a firearm violation in the vicinity of 18th and Johnston streets.

Reports indicate that the officers spotted two juveniles, with one later identified as Siderio, at the intersection of 18th and Barbara streets. Siderio, sought for questioning in connection with a firearm investigation, allegedly fired a stolen laser-equipped 9mm handgun at the officers’ vehicle as they tried to stop the boys after activating their lights.

After the initial shots were fired, Siderio attempted to flee, prompting two officers to exit the vehicle and fire at him. Despite this, Siderio managed to escape. However, Mendoza pursued and fired two more shots at Siderio, hitting him in the upper right back while he was face-down on the sidewalk, approximately half a car length away.

Siderio was swiftly transported to Presbyterian Hospital but tragically pronounced deceased at 7:29 p.m. The other juvenile, aged 17, was detained for investigation but subsequently released pending further inquiries. Additionally, one officer required medical attention at Presbyterian Hospital for injuries sustained from glass shards in his face and eyes.

Further investigation revealed that the handgun used by Siderio was loaded with one round in the chamber and five rounds in the magazine. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the incident, which escalated into a tragic outcome resulting in legal proceedings against Mendoza for his role in the young boy’s death.
