Rochdale, Greater Manchester – A public inquiry is set to investigate potential intelligence failures in the case of the brutal murder of imam Jalal Uddin. The 71-year-old Uddin was bludgeoned with a hammer in a children’s play area in Rochdale on February 18, 2016. The inquiry aims to determine whether any lapses in intelligence contributed to this tragic outcome.
The murder was carried out by Mohammed Kadir and Mohammed Syeedy, both of whom were sympathizers of the terrorist group Islamic State. Uddin’s practice of Ruqyah, a form of exorcism, was considered “black magic” by the terrorist organization, leading to their consumption by hatred of him. Kadir fled the UK after the killing and is believed to have headed to Syria, while Syeedy was convicted in 2016 of murdering Mr. Uddin and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 24 years.
Judge Thomas Teague KC, the chief coroner of England and Wales, stated that the inquiry will focus on establishing whether any failures occurred in the gathering, handling, or assessment of intelligence that might have contributed to Uddin’s tragic death. Closed sessions will be held as some important evidence cannot be heard in open court.
The inquiry will take place in open hearings in the week commencing September 23 next year at a venue to be fixed.
