KANSAS CITY, MO – A simmering feud between neighbors in a quiet Kansas City neighborhood ended in gunfire this week, leaving one man dead and another facing murder charges.
Authorities say Jeffrey King, 42, is accused of fatally shooting Chris Wells, 41, following an ongoing series of disputes that have escalated over several months. According to court documents, witnesses reported that King shot Wells in the back after a physical altercation broke out in the street outside their homes.
Police responded to the scene Monday afternoon after Wells’ wife discovered her husband had been shot. She told investigators she was out walking her dog when she noticed King approach her property, carrying a blanket. According to court affidavits, King allegedly threw the blanket into the front yard, prompting Wells’ wife to contact her husband at work and alert him to the incident.
Wells returned home and confronted King, which quickly turned physical, officials said. Neighbors reported hearing a series of gunshots shortly after the confrontation began. Surveillance audio from a nearby residence recorded at least eight shots, though the actual struggle was hidden from camera view.
Two juveniles, who witnessed the shooting from a nearby vehicle, told detectives they saw Wells lying face down in the street when King stood over him and fired at his back.
During the investigation, authorities recovered multiple 9 mm firearms and ammunition from King’s residence. These matched the shell casings found at the scene, according to police.
A search of King’s home also produced a note referencing Wells and complaints about property damage, loud music, and other neighborhood disputes. Investigators believe the content of the note reflects the ongoing antagonism between the two men.
Records show Wells and his family had documented prior incidents involving King with their homeowners association and law enforcement. Reports indicate King had previously harassed neighbors and, at times, blocked access to their mailbox with parked cars. In addition, a no-contact order was in place, meant to prevent direct interactions between King and Wells or his family.
After his arrest, King was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. He is being held at the Clay County Detention Center on a $5 million bond. Court records indicate his next appearance is set for January 20 for a bond reduction hearing, followed by a preliminary hearing on February 27.
Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they review additional evidence and witness statements surrounding the deadly dispute.
