South Bend, Indiana — Notre Dame Athletic Director Pete Bevacqua has recently intensified his criticism of the Atlantic Coast Conference, voicing concerns over perceived efforts to undermine the Fighting Irish’s chances in the ongoing College Football Playoff discussions. Bevacqua’s frustration stems from a belief that the ACC prioritized Miami’s inclusion in the playoff race over Notre Dame.
Following Bevacqua’s remarks, Big 12 Conference Commissioner Brett Yormark responded sharply, characterizing Bevacqua’s comments as “totally out of bounds.” He expressed his objections during a recent media appearance, underscoring that such public criticisms are inappropriate and suggesting that, had he been present, he would have addressed Bevacqua directly.
Yormark also shared his own disappointment after Selection Sunday, noting that only Texas Tech represented the Big 12 in the playoff lineup. The absence of additional teams like BYU reflected a missed opportunity for the conference, which was aiming for more than one postseason berth this season.
Despite his frustrations, Yormark acknowledged the committee’s overall decisions, recognizing why teams like Alabama and Miami were granted at-large bids over others. “Was I happy about BYU, no,” he admitted, but he also remarked that the selection process, while not perfect, did show progress.
At the time of this report, it remained unclear whether Bevacqua and Yormark had communicated directly about the situation. However, Bevacqua mentioned that he had engaged in discussions with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey regarding the playoff format after Notre Dame’s exclusion from contention.
Bevacqua aired his grievances during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show and reiterated his surprise at the ACC’s approach during a press conference the next day. He emphasized his respect for the universities within the conference, including Miami, while questioning why the ACC felt the need to launch a social media campaign perceived as an attack on Notre Dame’s football program.
“I think it’s important to clarify that this is not about the institutions themselves,” Bevacqua said. He expressed disappointment at the strategy employed by the ACC, which he interpreted as a concerted effort to discredit his team.
As the playoff landscape continues to evolve, the conflict between Notre Dame and ACC officials highlights the competitive tensions in college football, especially as programs vie for postseason recognition and visibility on the national stage. As discussions surrounding conference affiliations and playoff formats continue, the dynamics between flagship programs like Notre Dame and their rivals are likely to remain a focal point.
