NEW YORK, NY – A woman from Queens has been charged with second-degree murder following the discovery of her apartment superintendent’s body hidden in a garbage bag under her bed. The incident unfolded after the victim, Jose Portillo, 55, reportedly went to collect a substantial amount of unpaid rent from the woman.

Sandra Coto Navarro, 48, also faces charges of tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with Portillo’s death. Authorities uncovered the grisly scene in the apartment on 70th Avenue in Kew Gardens Hills after the landlord alerted them. Surveillance footage showed Portillo entering the apartment but not exiting.

Upon police arrival, they discovered Portillo’s body concealed under a bed. The investigation revealed that Portillo had been struck on the head and stabbed in the neck and leg, according to law enforcement.

Tension and grief were palpable when Portillo’s widow confronted Navarro during her arrest, exclaiming in Spanish, “You killed my husband!” The emotional exchange was witnessed by attending officers.

The tragic event is believed to have unfolded over $24,000 in overdue rent that Portillo was attempting to collect. Though Coto Navarro’s husband, who was reportedly absent at the time of the crime, has not been charged, the details surrounding the encounter remain harrowing for those involved.

Local residents, familiar with Portillo’s longstanding role as the building superintendent, have expressed shock and sadness. Known for his helpful nature, Portillo often assisted tenants with various issues, leaving a lasting impression on the community.

A neighbor recalled Portillo actively seeking to resolve rent-related issues the night before he disappeared. The neighbor, referencing conversations from that evening, was unsure if the intended rent collection involved Navarro or another tenant.

Portillo, a father and divorcé, was well-regarded among neighbors for his willingness to help those in need. His sudden and violent death has left a void in the community, which he served for many years with dedication and kindness.
