Milan, Italy — Andrea Bocelli is set to take the stage as a headliner for the opening ceremony of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics on February 6, joining previously announced performer Mariah Carey, organizers announced recently. The event will take place at the iconic San Siro stadium and will showcase a vibrant Parade of Athletes alongside a variety of entertainment scheduled to unfold during a three-hour performance.
In a nod to the unique layout of the Milan Cortina Games, which are the most geographically spread out in Olympic history, the ceremony will feature segments from three additional locations. It aims to include athletes from diverse sports by broadcasting live moments from Cortina, nestled in the beautiful Dolomite mountains, Livigno in the Alps, and Predazzo in the autonomous province of Trento.
The ceremony will also honor the late Giorgio Armani, the renowned Italian fashion designer who passed away in September at age 91. Not only did Armani create the Olympic uniforms for the Italian team, but his influence on Milan’s fashion scene is highly regarded, evidenced by landmarks such as the Armani theater, his Silos museum, and his involvement with the EA7 Emporio Armani Milano basketball team.
Bocelli, an internationally recognized crossover tenor, has made waves worldwide with his impressive versatility, performing at prestigious events like the coronation of King Charles III and the 75th anniversary of Italy’s Constitution. His recent album, “Duets (30th Anniversary),” features collaborations with artists from various genres, enhancing his reputation for blending classical and contemporary music.
The tenor’s performance at the Olympics will take place amid a world tour that continues the day after the ceremony. He will be headlining a concert at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio, on February 7, followed by several more performances in the U.S.
Organizers believe Bocelli’s participation will create an unforgettable highlight during the event, capturing the essence of Olympic spirit and lending a modern, global perspective to the festival’s narrative.
Marco Balich, who has a rich history of producing unforgettable Olympic ceremonies, is at the helm of this year’s event. Additional performers include Carey, who brings her pop star pedigree to Milan, and Italian actors Sabrina Impacciatore and Matilde De Angelis, both of whom will also participate in the ceremony. Impacciatore is known for her role in the second season of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” while De Angelis gained recognition from the Netflix series “The Law According to Lydia Poet.”
Speakers estimate an audience of around 60,000 at the stadium, with millions more expected to watch the spectacle unfold on television. As the Games approach, excitement continues to build, culminating in the closing ceremony featuring acclaimed ballet star Roberto Bolle in Verona’s ancient Roman Arena on February 22.
