Omaha man’s head nearly detaches from his body after girlfriend delirious on LSD shoots him with shotgun

OMAHA, NE – A Nebraska woman accused of fatally shooting her boyfriend while under the influence of LSD has entered a plea agreement, leading prosecutors to reduce her murder charge to manslaughter, according to court documents.

Alyssa K. Roman, 31, entered a no contest plea last month regarding the December 29, 2023, shooting death of Alan Critser, 33, at their shared residence near Hanover Circle and Mormon Bridge Road. The case, which drew considerable attention due to its chaotic circumstances and the involvement of hallucinogenic drugs, is now moving toward sentencing later this year.

Authorities responded to a disturbance in the area after receiving a call about a possible home invasion at a nearby house. Witnesses reported that a woman, later identified as Roman, had attempted to enter another home, appearing disoriented and wearing only a shirt despite snowy weather conditions. The incident led law enforcement to Roman’s residence, where they discovered Critser’s body.

Inside the home, police found evidence of a violent encounter. According to court records, officers observed blood spattered along the walls and what appeared to be human tissue in the upstairs hallway. Critser was located in an upstairs bedroom, suffering from a fatal gunshot wound to his upper torso and neck. The murder weapon, a shotgun, was found nearby with women’s clothing draped over it, investigators noted.

After being detained, Roman was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation. Officers noted that she exhibited symptoms consistent with excited delirium, a state often associated with stimulant or hallucinogenic drug use. Laboratory tests later confirmed the presence of drugs in her system.

During questioning, Roman acknowledged she had been under the influence of LSD, telling authorities she had taken the hallucinogenic around noon on the day of the incident. Interviews were conducted more than 12 hours after she ingested the substance, and Roman reportedly stated that she was still feeling its effects at that time.

Court documents detail that Roman told investigators she and Critser had been discussing past traumas before the shooting occurred. She claimed to have little memory of the incident afterward, insisting that only the two of them were present in the home when the shooting happened. Roman made additional statements indicating her involvement in Critser’s death.

A judge reviewing the case noted that, while Roman did not appear intoxicated during her hospital interview, her demeanor changed dramatically after she was informed that Critser was dead, at which point she became hysterical.

After negotiations with prosecutors, the murder charge was reduced in light of Roman’s admission regarding her drug use and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The plea agreement allows for sentencing on manslaughter charges rather than first- or second-degree murder.

Roman remains in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced in September. The outcome of the sentencing hearing will determine the duration and conditions of her imprisonment following the acceptance of her plea.
