Outbreak Mystery: Over 150 Sick on British Cruise Ship Due to Gastrointestinal Illness

Aboard the Queen Victoria cruise ship, a mystery gastrointestinal illness has affected as many as 154 passengers with symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. The ship, operated by Cunard Cruise Line, is currently being investigated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as the cause of the outbreak remains unknown. Departing from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the vessel is scheduled to reach Honolulu, HI on Feb. 12, carrying 1,824 passengers and 967 crew members.

The number of infected individuals has risen to 154, an increase from the previously reported 139. Out of the total number of affected individuals, 129 are passengers and 25 are crew members. The CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program is closely monitoring the situation and examining the ship’s response and protocols. The cause of the illness, however, remains a mystery as investigations continue.

Cunard Cruise Line has confirmed that “a number of guests had reported symptoms of gastrointestinal illness on board” and that they are implementing protocols to ensure the “wellbeing” of those on board. The cruise line is working to contain the outbreak and provide necessary support to the affected individuals.

Despite ongoing efforts, the actual cause of the infectious disease and the manner in which it has spread throughout the ship remain unknown at this time. While the situation is being closely managed, the exact measures taken to prevent further spread and ensure the safety of passengers and crew are yet to be fully disclosed.

The affected passengers and crew are being closely monitored and supported by the ship’s medical staff. In addition to health protocols, the ship’s response to the outbreak is under investigation by the CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program, which aims to establish strict guidelines for health measures and protocols on cruise ships.

As the investigation continues, the cruise ship’s staff are working to address the situation and provide necessary medical care and support to those who have been affected. The spread of the illness has caused concern and heightened attention to health and safety measures on cruise ships, prompting industry-wide discussions on preventive measures and response protocols in the future.
