Outrage Prompted by Images of Emaciated Iranian Prisoner on Hunger Strike

Outrage has erupted after images of an emaciated Iranian prisoner were released to the public. Dr. Farhad Meysami, a physician and activist, was arrested in July 2018 and sentenced to 33 years in prison for opposing the Iranian government’s hijab law. While in prison, he went on a hunger strike to protest his unjust imprisonment.

Startling photos have surfaced of Dr. Meysami, showing the dramatic physical toll his hunger strike has taken on his body. Meysami’s family has been vocal in their criticism of the Iranian government, and have called for his immediate release.

The international community has also joined in the chorus of voices demanding Meysami’s release. Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, who was also imprisoned for his activism, was recently released following a hunger strike of his own.

In response to the outcry, the Iranian government has announced that Dr. Meysami will be released on bail. According to reports, he is in stable condition and is receiving medical treatment.
