Over 1900 Dead After Devastating 7.8 Earthquake Hits Turkey and Syria

The death toll from a powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Friday has risen to over 1,900 people, according to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The earthquake, which struck at 8:55 pm local time, is the worst disaster to hit Turkey in 84 years, according to Erdogan. The quake caused buildings to collapse in both countries, with more than 1,500 people reported dead in Turkey alone.

Rescue efforts have been underway since the quake struck, but many people remain trapped in the rubble. In Turkey, the government has declared a three-day period of mourning.

Turkey’s oil pipelines have been undamaged by the quake, according to an official, and flows are continuing.

The quake was felt as far away as Greece, Israel and the United Arab Emirates, and aftershocks are still occurring.

The full extent of the damage caused by the quake is still being assessed, and the death toll is expected to rise.
