WILTON MANORS, FL – A touching tribute to the victims of the Parkland mass shooting has received a much-needed restoration almost six years after the tragic event. Volunteers were seen on Saturday working on the mural, located along the 2400 block of Northeast 13th Avenue at The Yard in Wilton Manors. The mural was created in memory of the 17 lives lost in the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Valentine’s Day in 2018.
The restoration efforts come just before the sixth anniversary of the shooting, as the community prepares to honor and remember the lives lost. The mural, completed in 2019, features images of the victims and was created by students who survived the shooting. Organizer Julio Busciolano emphasized the healing power of art, stating, “Art is therapy. Art is healing.”
The volunteers, led by Busciolano, came together to touch up the mural and preserve the memories it holds. As time has passed, the mural has suffered some damage, and the impending redevelopment of The Yard means that the mural’s days are numbered. However, organizers have expressed their intention to create a digital version of the mural in the future.
The art project has served as a therapeutic outlet for survivors and a way to honor the victims. Despite the challenges, the community remains committed to continuing the mission of remembrance and healing. Busciolano and the volunteers have emphasized the importance of teaching future generations about the tragedy and the power of art to heal and unite communities.
As the anniversary approached, the community came together to ensure that the mural would look its best for the commemoration. Through their efforts, they have not only restored the mural but also embodied the resilience and strength of the Parkland community. Their dedication serves as a testament to the enduring impact of the tragic event and the power of art to provide healing and hope.
In the face of the looming redevelopment, the community is determined to keep the memory of the victims alive through the digital version of the mural. The restoration efforts stand as a symbol of the community’s unwavering commitment to honor and remember the lives lost in the Parkland shooting.
